In an emergency, call for help first
If you think someone is having a stroke, or anything is seriously wrong, do not look it up. Call immediately.
Stroke treatment is time critical. Acting quickly changes the outcome, and it is always better to call and be wrong than to wait and be right.
What StrokePath is
StrokePath is an educational and self-guided information service. It explains what commonly happens after a stroke, and offers general activities, guidance and reference material for survivors and the people caring for them.
What StrokePath is not
StrokePath does not:
- diagnose any condition
- prescribe treatment, exercise or medication
- give advice tailored to one person's medical situation
- monitor anyone, or notice when something is going wrong
- stand in for a doctor, therapist, nurse or rehabilitation team
Using StrokePath does not create a practitioner and patient relationship between you and StrokePath, or between you and anyone who contributed to its content. No one reviewing this service is treating you.
Check with your team before you start
Recovery after a stroke is individual. Two people with the same diagnosis can need opposite things, and something that helps one person can harm another. What is safe depends on matters StrokePath cannot know, including your medication, your swallowing, your balance, your skin, your blood pressure and how recently your stroke happened.
Speak to your doctor or therapist before starting any exercise, changing a routine, changing what someone eats or drinks, or altering how you move or position someone. If your team tells you something different from what you read here, follow your team.
Medication
Never start, stop, change or double a dose based on anything in StrokePath. Medication after a stroke is prescribed for that individual, and changes belong to the prescriber. If you are unsure about a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
How our content is reviewed
The content is written by rehabilitation professionals and reviewed before publication. Material that carries real safety risk shows its review status inside the app, so you can see what still needs a clinician's attention rather than having to assume.

When to stop and get help
Stop whatever you are doing and contact a healthcare professional if you notice:
- any new weakness, numbness, drooping or difficulty speaking
- chest pain, severe headache, or sudden changes in vision
- choking, coughing or a wet voice during or after eating or drinking
- a fall, or a near fall
- skin that is broken, or red and does not fade
- pain that is new, sharp, or getting worse
- confusion or drowsiness that is out of character
This list is not exhaustive. If something feels wrong, treat it as wrong and get it checked.
Caring for someone else
If you are supporting another person, the same applies. General guidance cannot account for their particular condition, and you are not expected to make clinical judgements on your own. Ask their team. That is what they are there for, and asking is not a failure.

To the fullest extent permitted by South African law, StrokePath is not liable for any loss, injury or damage arising from decisions made on the basis of it. Nothing here limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act or any other law that cannot lawfully be excluded.
